Several students from Life High School Waxahachie (LHSW) and Life High School Oak Cliff (LHSOC) had the opportunity to compete at the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) State Competition, held in Dallas on February 26–27.

Life High School Oak Cliff February Coach Spotlight

Coach Calvin Davis serves as our assistant HS football coach and is also our ISS teacher, and his impact on our campus reaches far beyond his job title. Mr. Davis is known for being photo- and media-savvy, helping highlight and promote Life School Athletics and our football players in a way that celebrates their hard work and dedication. He does an excellent job communicating with stakeholders and building strong connections between our school, families, and the community. What truly sets Coach apart is the incredible rapport he has with our student-athletes. He takes the time to mentor, guide, and prepare them not only for success on the field but also for opportunities beyond high school. From helping athletes prepare for college visits to encouraging them to think about their futures, Coach Davis plays a vital role in their development. He is also someone who consistently steps up to help wherever he is needed. Mr. Davis includes staff members in the process, creates buy-in across the campus, and brings innovative thinking to the way we support and promote our students. Life High School Oak Cliff is stronger because of educators like Coach, who pour their energy, creativity, and passion into our students every single day. Life High School Waxahachie February Coach Spotlight

Coach Eric Bishop has been part of Life School for 16 years, faithfully serving our students both in the classroom and on the field. He teaches BIMM 1 and serves as an assistant coach for boys’ and girls’ soccer. A graduate of Boling High School, Coach Bishop continued his education at Sam Houston State University and Texas A&M Commerce. His leadership and vision led to the establishment of the Life Waxahachie soccer program in 2014. During its inaugural season, the program consisted of varsity teams only, and Coach Bishop coached both the boys' and girls' teams—laying the foundation for what has grown into a strong and competitive program today. Beyond wins and losses, Coach Bishop is known for developing meaningful relationships with students and exemplifying Life School’s mission of developing leaders for the future. His dedication, character, and commitment to our student athletes have left a lasting legacy. We are truly blessed to have Coach Bishop as part of our Life School athletic family and are grateful for his years of service and leadership.

Life Middle School Waxahachie is proud to announce that 7th and 8th-grade Life Skills teacher Lisa Richter has secured more than $10,000 in funding to renovate her classroom and expand real-world learning opportunities for her students. The effort, which began with a student-run booth at the Waxahachie Christmas Parade, grew into a remarkable story of community connection, generosity, and a shared commitment to student independence.

Richter, who joined Life School in January 2025, came to the campus with years of experience as an educator in the area. Though she initially discovered the open position by chance, she says the fit felt perfect.

"Life School feels like coming home," said Richter, who is also the parent of a Life School alumnus.

Working alongside partner teacher Angel De Leon, Richter set out from the very beginning of the school year to give her students hands-on opportunities to practice the daily living skills they learn in the classroom. She began planning community field trips — only to quickly discover that the budget to support them was limited.

Rather than scale back her vision, Richter got to work.

A Parade, a Parent, and a Plan

This past holiday season, Richter organized a fundraising table at the Waxahachie Christmas Parade, set up in front of the home of a Life School parent who partnered with her to help make it happen. Students assembled and sold hand-crafted ornaments, served coffee, and offered hot chocolate to community members who stopped by. A local artist — a resident at Daymark — donated 20 to 30 original paintings to be sold in support of the program.

The event did more than raise money. That same artist now visits Richter's classroom twice a month to create art alongside her students, bringing an ongoing creative outlet and meaningful relationship to the Life Skills program. Local businesses also aided in the effort with separate fundraisers, including Raising Cane's Waxahachie, which contributed additional support.

The parent who hosted the parade table took things a step further — sharing the story of the Life Skills program with their network, which ultimately led to a connection with JBGL Builder Finance, LLC, A Green Brick Partners Company. That relationship resulted in a generous $10,000 donation to support the program.

"A Life Skills Teacher's Dream"

The funding allowed Richter and De Leon to plan and fully fund field trips for the remainder of the school year, giving students the chance to practice real-world skills outside the classroom. The funds will also support a complete renovation of the kitchen area within the Life Skills classroom, a space where students learn practical cooking and daily living skills. Efforts to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the full $16,000 REACH classroom renovation are ongoing. Renovations are expected to be completed this summer, with the updated classroom ready for students when school resumes in the fall.

"This is a Life Skills teacher's dream," said Richter. "It will help us teach independent living skills beyond these four walls. It will help teach safety. And it will make sure we are better able to cater to each of our students' needs and preferences. When I see what this makes possible, I know that we're doing our job — helping our students become truly self-sufficient and independent."

De Leon, who works alongside Richter daily to support their students, emphasized the broader significance of what the community made possible. "Our students are learning that the world is accessible to them — that they can navigate it, contribute to it, and thrive in it. Watching this community come together to make that possible has been incredible. It reinforces everything we believe about what education should look like for our kids."

Partnership at the Heart of the Mission

The story of this grant reflects something central to who Life School is. Life School's mission is to develop leaders with life skills through strong academics, character training, and partnerships with parents and the community — and this effort embodies all three. From a parent who opened their home to a corporation that opened its checkbook, the community around Life Middle School Waxahachie showed up in meaningful ways to invest in students who deserve every opportunity to thrive.
